Seaside Coaching Staff
FRED FEATHERSTONE, Club Assistant Coach/Founder
Fred founded Seaside Volleyball Club in 1990. He was inducted to the Junior College Volleyball Hall of Fame in 2009. He has led 4 teams to the National Championship and numerous teams to a top 10 finish at JO’s. Fred also coached 3 of the 2008 Olympic Gold Medalists on our USA Men’s Volleyball Team while they played for Seaside. Fred is currently the head coach for the Grossmont College men’s team.
MIKE BIRD, 18-1
Mike has been coaching youth volleyball for 22 years. Throughout his coaching career he has led his teams to 11 League Championships. Most recently, Mike has coached for Mt. Carmel and Try City Christian. Mike was both a setter and outside hitter for Cal State Northridge where he earned his degree in physics. He is currently a physical science teacher at Mt. Carmel.
JOEL FIHN, 17-1
Joel has been in the volleyball coaching community since 1993. While coaching for Seaside from 1994-2001, he led both his 18-1 team (1999) and his 16-1 team (2000) to 5th place finishes at the Junior Olympics. A couple of notable athletes on those teams are 2008 Olympic Gold Medalist David Lee and 2001 NCAA Freshman of the Year Kimo Tuyay. Joel has worked with Stanford Men's Volleyball, San Diego State, and the USA Junior National Team.
JON GIRTEN, 16-1
Jon has helped coach his alma mater, Mt. Carmel to three CIF Division 2 Titles in as many years. As a player, Jon was CIF Division 2 State Player of the year in 2004. While an athlete at Palomar College, Jon was named to the 1st Team All-State in 2005. He has been coaching since 2006.
JAMIE BOYLE, 15-1
Jamie has been coaching in the community for 4 years. He has helped coach his alma mater, Rancho Bernardo to a great deal of success in recent years. He is a avid student of the game, consistently pushing his team to higher levels of play.
RUSS BIRD 14-1
Russ is an integral part of our Seaside coaching family. Along with coaching our 14-1 team, he is also Seaside's Director of Operations and Communications. Russ played college ball at Cal Poly SLO and SDSU. He has been coaching in Poway for 10 years including 2 years at Poway High where he helped the boys win 2 CIF championships and 1 for the girls. He also worked as an assistant coach for the San Diego Spikers, a professional women’s team.
MILES HOLLAND
Miles has been coaching both girls and boys youth volleyball since 2003. He moved to San Diego recently from Stockton, California where he received his Bachelor’s in Sports Sciences from UOP and his Master’s in Kinesiology from Fresno Pacific University. He was an outside hitter and middle blocker while playing for UOP. Miles is also a certified fitness trainer as well as a physical education teacher.
